1. Position Description
The School of Constructed Environments (SCE) is seeking applicants for a full-time renewable term appointment at the rank of Assistant Professor in Product Design starting Fall 2009. Successful applicants must hold terminal degrees in their respective fields and/or equivalent professional standing, and must demonstrate a strong record of excellence in teaching and scholarship/creative work.
The successful candidate for this position will be a product designer who has a demonstrable background in teaching research methodology and experience in a variety of areas in the product design field. This individual will teach independently and as a member of teams in core product design seminars and studios; will be an instructor and/or coordinator of special collaborative projects with the for-profit and non-profit sectors; will work closely with the School’s leadership to define and implement the product design department’s mission across its curriculum; will develop and assist in the implementation of new curriculum; will rationalize, facilitate and enhance connections and relationships between and among other disciplines with in the School for Constructed Environments at Parsons and the New School University; and will strengthen connections and relationships among sophomore, junior and senior level curricula. He or she will be specifically charged with monitoring and coordinating junior level curriculum in Product Design and developing strategies that will prepare students for four and five year courses of study. This individual will also take part in a team that will develop graduate programs in Product Design.
Through an immersion in materials, processes, aesthetic considerations and proactive social engagement, Parsons’ Product Design cultivates the technical skills and intellectual habits essential to imaginatively explore and responsibly integrate the swiftly expanding roles of a successful professional product designer.
2. Requirements
• A strong commitment to teaching undergraduates in a progressive, urban university setting
• Significant experience in the field of product design
• A commitment to the application of socially responsible methods and ethical practices in design
• Team-teaching and collaborative project development and execution experience
• At least three years teaching experience, preferably in courses which include a combination of studios, seminars and tutorials
• Curriculum development experience
• A strong background in academic research methodology
• In-depth knowledge of digital technology
