WASP Knife Will Freeze And Blow Up Your Organs
gizmodo.com — Add this to my “Things to hyperventilate over” list: British police are on the lookout for something called a WASP Knife, a weapon that injects a ball of compressed gas into its victim that then expands to the size of a basketball, instantly freezing and exploding their internal organs.

- davidlick, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1No, I agree. Those 12g cartridges have been around since I was a little kid. Seems as though someone should have come up with a similar idea before. Oh well, it's here now.

- YancyFryJr, on 07/20/2008, -7/+185It's disturbing to imagine what that would do to a person.
- rmeddy, on 07/20/2008, -3/+98Yeah! Freeze and Blow up your organs ,that's what'll do.
- mutz, on 07/20/2008, -1/+11people inventing these things are uberdisturbed maybe something for tf2
- clownx, on 07/20/2008, -10/+3Think about it: a replacement for the butterfly knife for the spy. Instead of just killing the enemy, it also creates a large explosion, damaging buildings and other people in the area.
- Charlotte_Web, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Considering that you actually have to be holding the knife to stab the person and press the button to release the gas, that doesn't sound like such a good idea...
- r3negadeX, on 08/11/2008, -0/+5They had a similar weapon in TimeSplitters: Future Perfect, except it was a dart that you shot instead of a knife. But it had the same (hilarious) effect
- humperdeath, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Can you set it so that it will blow your organ up, then freeze it?
- Brad324, on 07/20/2008, -0/+15^ Viagra already does that.

- freakon, on 07/20/2008, -28/+8How awesome is this??!? I can't believe this wasn't thought of sooner. They just need to make it a little cheaper, 380USD is a little too expensive.
- atgmac, on 07/20/2008, -10/+18You're an idiot. This isn't awesome at all.
- iMoth, on 07/20/2008, -3/+8no, i'm pretty sure it is awesome.
- Jumpeplowski, on 07/20/2008, -2/+21Because you really need a weapon that blows people up from the inside.
- Dundasbro, on 07/20/2008, -9/+2Gotta kill Batman somehow.
- Myonosken, on 07/20/2008, -3/+19Yes because this is ***** necessary when London has had 30 knife deaths and 21 injured already this year. ***** genius, lets make it just 51 dead.
- CamperBob, on 07/20/2008, -2/+4(shrug) When compressed-air injection knves are outlawed, only outlaws will have compressed-air injection knives.
- Myonosken, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Do you know much about weapon attacks in the UK? Very few are using illegal weapons- most are kitchen knives, big sticks or hunting rifles.
- ORBAT, on 07/20/2008, -4/+10Yeah, so the next time the friendly neighbourhood crackhead is having a bad day and really needs to cut someone up they can use one of these handy-dandy innard-exploding knifes.
Great idea, you ***** *****.- Dundasbro, on 07/20/2008, -5/+4Where the hell is a crackhead going to get his hands on an innard-exploding knife? Its a little expensive for him methinks.
- ORBAT, on 07/20/2008, -5/+3Read the comment I was replying to, then read my comment again. If it still doesn't make sense: congratulations, you are so phenomenally stupid you should be declared a ward of the state.
- benologist, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6Same place crackheads get all their *****.... stolen from someone who did have the money to buy it.
- iMoth, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2 /fail
- ProfessorFoo, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2I guess people on digg would rather a crackhead got his hands on a gun than a knife? Yeah both will obviously kill you but I would rather he had to get to me before I get annihilated. And yes I am assuming this based on the fact that everyone on digg seems to be anti gun control.
- FutureGuy, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2And what the ***** do you want to do with it? Go see a psychiatrist before its too late.
- atgmac, on 07/20/2008, -10/+18You're an idiot. This isn't awesome at all.
- maj0rm0j0, on 07/20/2008, -7/+58This thing is great I ordered the buying guide for it. It's pricey, but great for diving. Here sharky sharky.
- Evi1d33d, on 07/20/2008, -10/+7A knife that uses 12gram CO2 cartridges hardly worth that much money. Besides it's really inefficient as it only gives you 1.5 shots. If you missed the first stab you are screwed.
A paintball gun with a 12gram can shoot 25 shots at 280 fps, the knife will work better in short bursts.- smokewater, on 07/20/2008, -0/+39Alright, you bring your paintball gun with you diving, I'll bring that knife, we'll see what works better against a shark.
- zarcu, on 07/20/2008, -0/+22Well its still a knife....
- Mononuclear, on 07/20/2008, -0/+17harpoon guns only have one shoot too.. what is your point? Have you ever been diving? If you get attacked by a shark and need this knife it won't be hard to hit the shark. Most likely it will have you in its jaws and so your arm will be poised to sink into its head. It's not like you are trying to stab random fish from 20ft.
- mntbikeracer1, on 07/20/2008, -4/+6It doesn't fire unless you stab. So you sir are retarded.
- Uchiha13, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2great for diving? the only ppl i can see buying this for safety are the kind of ppl that would look for something like a shark and kill it just for laughs. pathetic really
- nerdherder, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Yeah because everybody stabs sharks with knives when they get bored.
- Burgerb, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0dude... please watch this movie: sharkwater.com and adjust your thinking around sharks.
thanks!

- weegee101, on 07/20/2008, -0/+24Yeah, but it comes with nerfs to armor and long range weapons so you can't defend yourself against it.

- kawaiirobo, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Yea, it was, and usually I'd agree that this is crap, but the first article didn't have the exploding watermelon, so it's worth digging again.
- egthareal, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3But it was on Gizmodo, it's gotta be new!!!
- roflbrothel, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Dude, this ***** has been on Digg repeatedly. I'm noticing a lot of ***** repost lately.
- Kornstalx, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5too...
- duffy89, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1Indeed it was.. but you know Digg
- Myztry, on 07/20/2008, -0/+14Yeah. I was hoping they had a new version with an igniter for the gas (and oxygen) mix.
- ShadowMarth, on 07/20/2008, -6/+179Yeah, was on Digg before... Furthermore, its for divers, so that they can defend themselves from ***** sharks and *****. And honestly, I'd want one if I was a diver. In the unlikely but possible event you're attacked by a shark, this is practically the ideal knife to have, because firstly, it will actually be effective unlike a normal knife. Secondly, it will freeze them and carry the body to the surface before they thaw, so that most of the blood is released a ways away from you, so more sharks don't just smell the blood and come after you.
- PurpleSfinx, on 07/20/2008, -2/+38The whole time I was reading your comment, I thought you said 'drivers', not 'divers'.
You can imagine what went through my head.- VelvetoneFusion, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Candygram...
- skinnyskittles, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6hahaha in the unlikely but possible event that you're in your car and a giant ***** shark attacks you then this is practically the ideal knife to have
- SteelChicken, on 07/20/2008, -3/+8did that watermelon look frozen to you?
dummy - LittleDas, on 07/20/2008, -0/+14It won't actually freeze the whole shark. It will just blow a big ***** hole in it. You're probably gonna be covered in shark bits no matter what.
- chrishirsch, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1hopefully it buys you enough time to reload
- thirdeyeopen666, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10Thank you Mr. Schrute.
- mianos, on 07/20/2008, -11/+3Ever actually tried to stab a shark? The skin effectively an exoskeleton and very tough (wiki it). Underwater you have limited leverage and your speed is restricted by the water so you can't get the energy to pierce anything (e = mV squared).
I call *****.- Ebulating, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4You're supposed to aim for the eye, if possible. And if the knife is as sharp as it should be, penetrating shark skin shouldn't be that hard. Did you see the mythbusters where they successfully used shark skin as sandpaper?
- AgentMull, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Holy crap, you know the formula for kinetic energy. You must be a well respected shark expert.
- da_bradler, on 07/20/2008, -3/+2100 million sharks are killed annually and less then 10 humans are killed by sharks. And why exactly is it that humans are scared of sharks when we kill 10 million times more of them then they kill of us?
- dansai, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Because they're scary?
- Lavarock, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Because 100 million sharks are killed by gigantic boats with high-tensile nets and not guys swimming around underwater?
- Armitage2k, on 07/21/2008, -0/+2Best defense Danielson is no be there.... Want to be safe from sharks? Don't go in the water...
- PurpleSfinx, on 07/20/2008, -2/+38The whole time I was reading your comment, I thought you said 'drivers', not 'divers'.
- FrozenGonad, on 07/20/2008, -12/+2I posted a comment in this story the last time it was posted (6 hours ago) so I'm posting again just to make sure I'm in the thread so I look awesome if it gets popular.. ***** you!!!
- Flushnasty, on 07/20/2008, -13/+2HeadSHOT
- binky79, on 07/20/2008, -2/+77I concur with the first commenter on the Gizmodo blog, "Sure this is scary. But honestly, if someone wants to kill you, a normal knife will work just as well." And to add to that, if I'm going to be killed in a stabbing death, let it be instant and not 5 minutes of excruciating pain and suffering before bleeding to death.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/20/2008, -0/+21Ask anyone who's been stabbed or seen someone get shanked in prison.
You don't feel it immediately. That's why sometimes you hear in the news that some guy got stabbed 20-40 times. It won't stop the person right there unless you stab them in the heart, neck or eye. They'll keep fighting you for a few minutes.
With this thing, you could stab them anywhere and they'll drop right there. Even the legs.
You're still much better off with a taser for self-defense though. A knife requires close combat.- dondara, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8Attackers usually end up cutting themselves up a bit too. The think, fatty blood from the abdomen is very greasy and makes the knife really slick. And it smells horrible when it dries.
Knife fighting is very risky. Better off with a bat, chair or a lead pipe in the sitting room. - iroc409, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2I'd kinda prefer a pistol. Requires proper skill and training, but you might be able to avoid getting cut. Or ballooned. Or whatever.
- crossmr, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10I think the bigger issue is that a non-fatal stab could do much more serious damage. getting stabbed in the leg might hurt and you might need some surgery, but if someone catches you in the leg with that it is probably going to destroy a big piece of your leg.
- Nekiruhs, on 07/21/2008, -3/+1Hey dondara, I live across the street from you and right now there are some big guys in black suits at your door. You might want to answer it.
- dondara, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8Attackers usually end up cutting themselves up a bit too. The think, fatty blood from the abdomen is very greasy and makes the knife really slick. And it smells horrible when it dries.
- plnegative1, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1you have a better chance of living from being stabbed by a regular knife, though
- vierce, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7Plus, when you die and they ask you how you died, it would be much cooler.
"How did you die?"
-"My organs exploded"- PoonGnarfler, on 07/20/2008, -1/+7Someone is asking the dead person this?
- da_bradler, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1what if they stabbed you in the stomach? you wouldn't die instantly, your stomach would explode and you would die an incredibly slow painful death.
using exploding rounds on infantry is illegal according to international war treaties so I doubt this thing is even slightly legal.- clharlem149, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1does this count? it's not exactly an exploding round.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/20/2008, -0/+21Ask anyone who's been stabbed or seen someone get shanked in prison.

THis is not a new product Gizmodo (and I think Digg as well) covered this thing a few months ago... its not until some bleeding heart media coverage happens that it turns into a bad thing... Guns and Knives dont kill people... People Kill People... it you didnt have a Gun or a Knife and you wanted to kill someone you would use a club or a rock...

- jbenson2, on 07/20/2008, -9/+11Wow! What a weapon. The website indicates it is was originally meant for divers, but they have expanded their available market to include the military.
Today our soldiers face many new challenges and to overcome those challenges they deserve the most advanced equipment that is available to them. A simple knife is OK to have, but when it comes down to the last line of defense you want to be carrying something that will get the job done.
Introducing the WASP Injection Knife. A multi-shot gas injection weapon that is devastating to any living creature and will drop some of the largest mammals in a single stab. This easy-to-use, easy-to-reload weapon delivers up to a 24g shot of compressed gas at 800 psi. on land or underwater. It is silent when used and deadly to our enemies. No need to take a chance that the enemy can come back to attack you.
The WASP is ideally suited for:
* Special Ops Troops (Land or Sea)
* Downed Pilots Stranded In Open Water
or Remote Forests
* Military Survival Kits
* S.W.A.T. and Special Police- Skooma714, on 07/20/2008, -2/+14SWAT teams should use this?
And special police? I remember when they were called Secret Police. Hitler, Mussolini, and Stalin had them.- cerealjynx, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1We call them Rere Police now, it's more politically correct.
- lacronicus, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5"special police" are just police trained and equipped to take on more important criminal threats, such as those with automatic weapons and such. Unless you want to give every cop on the street a machine gun, or have cops with pistols try to take on criminals with machine guns, special police are your only option.
Police are, by their very nature, "anti-citizen;" but the difference between good police and bad police is who they go after. So long as they keep arresting murderers and stay away from protesters and the like, they're perfectly acceptable. - jpop, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2If a SWAT team member ever ended up needing to use a knife like this, something's seriously, seriously wrong.

On a brighter note, I think that most British bobby's are wearing stab/slice viests (similar to the US's bullet proof vests). From the article, which was quite awhile back is because it's more common to be stabbed than shot in the UK.- mdcraig62, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4mmmmh, It's a knife that kills things. It's not meant to walk the dog or take out the trash; how does it need to be productive?
- Ebulating, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Stab resistant vests are actually completely different then bullet resistant vest, which actually don't resist knives well. Modern anti-stab vests are actually similar to old-fashioned chain mail.

That said, Hollywood has done a real disservice to the knife. My experience is I'd much rather face an idiot who is holding a gun than an idiot holding a knife. And the times when I was holding the gun and the idiot was holding the knife didn't end well for either of us. I'd say the science of this supports the heightened anxiety. FYI: http://www.crimefilenews.com/2006/03/gun-vs-knife. ... - max4077, on 07/20/2008, -2/+0There is some fearmongering going on. - Tyorant, on 07/20/2008, -2/+3You say that as if guns were "banned" recently in the England.
- NikkiA, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7Well, societally speaking, it was 'recent'. The gun controls started in the 60s, and its only very recently - 1997 - that guns have been totally banned. 10 Years isn't that long, and besides, the bans aren't all that effective, its quite often that we hear about people shot dead, or police being involved in an armed stand-off.
That said, the media focus this week is on stabbing deaths, and so that's what the media is trying to get everyone panicky about.
All that in mind, this knife is an American invention by an American company. So no, we're not making advancements in stabbing technology. - MisterRik, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Of course, they aren't actually totally banned. You can still own certain types of gun, as long as you hold a license and have a police approved, locked gun cabinet.
- NikkiA, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2@MisterRik, true, however, as I understand it, handguns and assault rifles are essentially totally banned - neither can be owned by an individual (it's possible to own both for a licensed shooting range, but even then its a nightmare in paperwork). And those account for the majority of gun crimes reported on the news.
Shotguns are still ownable, but the paperwork has become excessively nightmarish to the point that even most farmers have given up trying to maintain it.
Of course, handguns didn't get banned until the 1997 rules, but assault rifles were banned a while after the Hungerford incident IIRC. It didn't stop 4 people using AK-47s to gun down a bodyguard outside a school near where I used to live, a few years ago

I call *****. This is NOT going to "freeze internal organs." Small areas of tissue, maybe, but the freezing damage will be insignificant to what's already been done by the blade.
And if you use it to inflate a shark so that it rises to the surface, drawing other predators away from you...well...what do you think is going to happen when you pull that knife out? That's right. An enormous fart accompanied by blood and offal is going to come spraying out of its newly-carved extra *****. All over you.
This is, of course, assuming that the shark is going to hold still long enough for you to stick the knife in and trigger the gas. Did anyone else notice how long it took for the guy in the demo video to activate the knife in the watermelon? There's a huge difference between a stationary, docile 10-pound watermelon and a thrashing, pissed-off 150-pound fish regarded as the top of the ocean food chain.
And let's not forget our gas laws from Chemistry class. The deeper you dive, the lower the temperature and the higher the pressure--both of which reduce the volume of gas this thing will spit out, reducing its effectiveness. Furthermore, you're in a very wet environment, and you also have a good chance of creating ice instantly in the gas channel when you activate it, rendering the system inoperable.
Used on land, what...you think this is going to stop a bear? And if you use this on another human being, what do you think is going to kill him? Having a 5.25" blade buried in his gut? Or the embarassment of making the biggest, messiest, smelliest shart EVAH when you pull the blade out? (And again, he'll be sharting all over YOU.)

- thecatcantalk, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3You may be right about the reduced volume of gas; I have dived a little (only 14 times, all in one summer) but I recall that the first thing one's taught is to NEVER hold one's breath, not even for a moment. Doing so during ascent can cause one's lungs to explode like a balloon. But there's way more air in a pair of lungs, than inside a 12 gram gas cartridge.
If my air tank doesn't ice up its line to the regulator, why would the CO2 do so? Is it contingent on greater pressure? I forget why gas under pressure comes out cold, but I know that icy lines are not something we learned about in dive class...?
You're right, though. It's a ***** weapon for jerking off while watching '300' for the twenty-third time. Looks like you have to depress the actuator by shifting your grip after penetration, to avoid "premature ejaculation" of the gas. Good luck doing that while stabbing a large fish that moves lightning-fast when injured. There'd never be time for that; think of the last time you touched a hot stove. How fast did your ANS (reflexes) jerk your hand away? Same goes for a shark.
Actual dive pros rarely carry knives, because they know that the chances of successfully killing a shark with a knife are horrible. The best defense is to fight back, aiming for the eyes and counting on the fact that sharks are opportunistic predators; they don't like meals that fight back. Which is why they pretty much always attack from below. Usually, if a shark sees you looking at him, he'll piss off. Or you get below him, which he doesn't like, either. They're stupid. And though sharks are the cockroaches of the sea (in that there are enormous numbers of them out there you'll never see), they almost never attack humans, anyhow, as we're not fatty enough to be appetizing.
Seriously, shark attacks are an unreal, imagined danger, just like child abduction, or terrorist attacks. The odds are astronomical. You're far more likely to be struck by lightning, or even die in an airplane crash. Notice that although humans swim in the sea all over the world, there are only a handful of shark attacks each year, most non-fatal: a stupid shark takes a bite and spits it out, swims away. And nearly all attacks occur when some idiot tourist goes for a swim at sunset in a known shark feeding area, after ignoring posted signs.- qazxsw2, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0"You may be right about the reduced volume of gas"
The advertised "basketball sized ball of gas" would halve in volume for every 10m of depth. If contained in the victim it's probably sufficient to cause an ascent from reasonable depths - and the "ball of gas" would expand on the way up.
"If my air tank doesn't ice up its line to the regulator, why would the CO2 do so? Is it contingent on greater pressure? I forget why gas under pressure comes out cold, but I know that icy lines are not something we learned about in dive class...?"
Freezing regulators (1st stage) can be a problem in cold water diving for that very reason.
The main difference here though is that with scuba you are gently drawing out a few litres of gas every 10 seconds or so, whereas with the capsule here you're pretty much emptying it in one blast.
"It's a ***** weapon"
Agreed - Guncrazy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2The reason your air tank doesn't ice up is because of the regulator, which prevents your air tank from decompressing all at once. Although the temperature of the air in your tank does drop every time you take a breath, the drop is so small that the water around it is able to heat it back up again.
You can see this effect for yourself by getting a couple of those "canned air" computer keyboard cleaners. With the first one, hold the release nozzle down until the whole thing is empty. You'll feel the can get really cold, and ice may form on the outside. With the second, just release the air in tiny, intermittent bursts. The second will get cold, too, but not nearly as cold as the first.
As to the gas volume, you might remember tables from your diving classes which show the amount of dive time you'll get from a full tank at different depths. The deeper you dive, the less time you can stay down. This is because when you're deep, you're using more air (by weight) with each breath than you do when you're shallow, even through the volume of your breaths does not change.
Oh, and actually, a 12 gram CO2 cartridge holds way more air than a pair of lungs. You can check it by emptying one into a latex condom. The inflated rubber is going to be obviously larger than your lungs. - purplesawdust, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1My head hurts
