Space Chimps Monkeying Around Isn't Entertaining
io9.com — If, by any chance, you've seen the trailers for Space Chimps and thought, "Hey! Wall-E was pretty good, and who wouldn't want to see the uplifting animated tale of three heroic monkeys traveling into space to save the world?" then I have one simple message for you: For the love of all that you hold dear, fight that thought with all you have.

- Chainheart, on 07/20/2008, -3/+38What exactly were they thinking releasing the same weekend as TDK?
- DanPlainview, on 07/20/2008, -0/+15That TDK is too dark for the audience that Space Chimps is aimed at. This movie seems to be trying to capture all of the family friendly audiences that will not see batman because it is too dark and violent. Those people and people with little kids.
- lazyrussian, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8Ah, the mormon folk.
- allisonaxe, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2sadly, those audiences still managed to invade the screens where "Dark Knight" is showing: in the theater I was in, for the first 15 minutes there was a family that brought noisy toddlers...
that and some idiot who left his cell-phone message beep on and was texting during the film, and some stupid woman sitting 3 seats away from me who harpy-cackled at everything the joker said..... and then the sound in the left channel kept cutting in and out for the first 30 minutes.......
I've had it with movie theaters. i've tolerated it for a while, but ugh, NO MORE!
...until something else i really want to see comes out, i guess. *sigh*
- inkyblue2, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4"maybe this way no one will notice."
- seantubridy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+10If you're bringing your 3 year old to see TDK, I feel sorry for you, your 3 year old and the audience.
- ndfn8, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3You're telling me. I went to see TDK and some douchebags brought their 2 year old to the theater. WTF.
- upsilonh24, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Yeah, I work in a cinema and it happens.
- GoneFishing, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Oh, by the way, my IMAX showed space monkeys ... SPACE MONKEY!!! instead of TDK.... way to go @MC.
- DanPlainview, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0"Oh, by the way, my IMAX showed space monkeys ... SPACE MONKEY!!! instead of TDK... SPACE MONKEYS!!! WOOT!!!"
I went ahead and fixed that for you ;-)

- TheTaoOfBill, on 07/20/2008, -1/+24I thought it looked dumb as soon as I saw the poster. Then I was reassured by the trailer. And now yet again by this review...
- Smaulz, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4I made the mistake of taking my girls to this one on Friday, (I was suckered in by the trailer). They seemed to enjoy it. I just spent the time trying to gouge my eyeballs out using only popcorn husks and a bent straw.
- quidpro, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Can I get yer number so I can call for your advice whenever I feel like going to see some movie? I could really use your unique psychic gift for deconstructing movie posters.
- TheTaoOfBill, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3From the poster I got two things that usually spell disaster. One. It was a movie completely revolving around monkeys. Usually when that happens the writers rely solely on "hehe monkeys are funny" jokes. I also had a face in palm moment when I read the tagline. "On July 18, go bananas". That just screamed this was going to be a cheesy "hehe monkeys are funny" movie. I did hold myself back from judging it too much because I thought okay maybe this might be a cool story about the original test apes that we launched into space. Then I saw the trailer and they were on planets and with aliens and wormholes and *****. So that took away my hope that a good story could come out of it.
And of course now we got this review.

- aladrin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2I thought exactly the same of the movie poster. It was obviously aimed at kids with no effort towards adults. Saturday morning cartoons would be more entertaining than it.
Yes, all from the posters. They were amazingly expressive of how crappy this would be.
I didn't need the trailer to confirm my suspicions, but that's exactly what it did.
I can't imagine why -anyone- went to see this. - Bennessy, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1I don't know, George Bush said it was the feel good comedy of the year.
- DanPlainview, on 07/20/2008, -1/+20How dare he belittle the milestone of cinema that is Space Chimps!
- sdellboy, on 07/20/2008, -4/+6Its films like this that make you yearn for the days of the Hollywood script-writers strikes...
- SteveThePlank, on 07/20/2008, -2/+23Space Chimps looks almost as bad as Meet Dave.
- XISUPERMANIX, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2Don't say that. Meet Dave sucked big time, when I saw the trailer a voice over said "Eddie Murphy in Eddie Murphy in... Meet Dave". I then realized this is what Eddie wanted all his life, he played more than one character in almost all his movies, some for no reason like the old Asian dude in Norbit. See he was trying to see what if he was someone else besides him. The sad thing is this will probably be the plot to his next movie.
- Traiklin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+8whoa whoa whoa, Now let's not say anything we will regret saying later.
- teamgwho, on 07/20/2008, -8/+3Look, this wasn't grand cinema, but it wasn't THAT bad. It was probably worth a rental or waiting for it on cable. I did think it would be funnier, but, eh. I walked in with low expectations, and I can honestly say "It didn't really suck"
not exactly a glowing review, but...- DanPlainview, on 07/20/2008, -2/+0You have seen the light.
- Xihix, on 07/20/2008, -0/+12The fact you went and spent money on this at all makes me feel sad for society.
- teamgwho, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1well in all honesty I didn't really want to go. My wife and son were going and I felt that I should go only because I've dragged them to movies they didn't want to see. This summer has been possibly one of the best summers for movies in recent memory.
Great: :Ironman, Kung Fu Panda, Wall-e, Wanted, TDK, Hellboy II (I haven't seen it but I'm going to assume Hulk fits in this catagory)
Good (or at last not terrible): Get Smart, Hancock, Space Chimps
Bad: Indiana Jones, The Happening
We've still got coming XF, Clone wars, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Midnight Meat Train, Mummy 3 (I thought the idea was stupid till I saw the trailer and it looks entertaining)

- D14BL0, on 07/20/2008, -7/+34Am I the only one who's seriously sick of seeing CGI talking animal movies? Humor (or lack thereof) aside, these all look exactly the same, and they're never funny.
- tweetsa, on 07/20/2008, -5/+0well at least it's not penguins
- ChileanGoD, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8...but I like Madagascar.
- MiniCooper2007, on 07/20/2008, -1/+1Cars, animals, penguins, robots, more robots, monsters, fish, and more things talking that shouldn't through CGI.
- MiniCooper2007, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1^ wow my English sucked there.
- ChileanGoD, on 07/20/2008, -1/+18Yeah, after WALL-E's success let's animate every ***** possible creature's adventure into space.
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0486321/- ousthouse, on 07/20/2008, -3/+15I think it takes more than a few weeks to make a full length cgi movie.
- doctordbx, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4Wall-E took 4 years... but it is hands down the best animated movie I have ever seen. Not just on the animation, but it had a fantastic story line as well.
- D14BL0, on 07/20/2008, -1/+4Yes, exactly. Wall-E's production has been known for a LOOONG time.
- HMMcKamikaze, on 07/20/2008, -6/+4I thought Wall-E was absolutely amazing, but still not as good as Hayao Miyazaki's best works (Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke.)
- ChileanGoD, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3I didn't say anything about production times nor I stated that they were started to be made after one film is out. But still, how about Madagascar and The Wild? The Wild came after Madagascar in short notice. I smell a pattern here.
- aquadoctorbob, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0@ChileanGoD: Don't forget Finding Nemo and A Shark's Tale. Or A Bug's Life and Antz. It's not just a pattern, it's some kind of sinister conspiracy.
- ousthouse, on 07/20/2008, -3/+15I think it takes more than a few weeks to make a full length cgi movie.
- Gimli, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6These CGI movies are getting way over saturated and this just goes to show how much so.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/20/2008, -9/+34"Then I have one simple message for you:" Kid movies are for kids.
Dancing monkeys: funniest thing ever to an 8 year old. Do they sing? Even better. Is it really simple? Holy *****, they'll understand and laugh.
"It's possible that I'm holding the movie up to standards it never wanted to reach; certainly, the kids in the screening I went to seemed to be having a good enough time."
It's a kids movie. It's supposed to be dumb.- NeoCortex, on 07/20/2008, -2/+19I disagree. There were many movies I watched as a kid that are still enjoyable as an adult. Or at the least, not painful to sit through as an adult. All of the original Disney animated movies, for instance. Just because a movie is aimed at children doesn't mean it gets a free pass a being a piece of *****.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2But it does means it's good if kids like it.
That's like complaining that you can't find any clothes that fit you when you are an adult shopping at a children's clothing store.
And as an adult, I can't sit through any Disney movie. Dancing gay cowboys are just not my thing.
/Jazz hands. - DraxusD, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1You're probably biased toward anything you saw and ejoyed as a child.
I agree with you though.
- AchaIemoipas, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2But it does means it's good if kids like it.

- PopASquatt, on 07/20/2008, -4/+37If it's not Pixar, it's *****.
- duihomer, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Not necessarily. But I do think that Brad Bird is a genius.
PS: This Chimp movie looks horrible. - AndrewDB, on 07/20/2008, -4/+2That's not true. Kung Fu Panda was awesome as hell.
- duihomer, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1Not necessarily. But I do think that Brad Bird is a genius.
- Browzer, on 07/20/2008, -1/+23I think an animated movie about chimps in space looks like "Citizen Kane" compared to "Beverly Hills Chihuahua":
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AoNDp03udhg- Meccabilly, on 07/20/2008, -0/+7If i ever meet who made that film i swear i will kill them. I'm beign serious. I don't even mind if i get the death penalty. They deserve it.
- CasinoJack, on 07/20/2008, -0/+9I cried blood after watching that trailer.
- jull1234, on 07/20/2008, -0/+15Before Wall-E, I was treated to a 'Fly Me to the Moon' preview followed directly by a 'Space Chimps' preview, which was then followed up by a preview of the soon to be epic 'Beverly Hills Chihuahua'. I felt dumber and a little scared.
- jrbrewin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3totally 100% agreed.. but out of the three, chimps looks more entertaining... by only a whisker
- emh924a, on 07/20/2008, -5/+1bad idea to open any movie the same day dark knight comes out real bad idea
- andejp12, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Totally! Especially since these have the exact same audiences.
- miket, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2yes exactly! all the mothers and fathers might, you know, get a baby sitter and go watch tdk.
- andejp12, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Totally! Especially since these have the exact same audiences.
- VitriolAndAngst, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4I saw it and my three-year-old was entertained. When he is four, is suspect that will be the cut-off for it challenging him. They had kind of cool alien landscapes, but most of it wasn't as good as a bad episode of --- I don't really know of cartoons that are this bad anymore.
Weak jokes, annoying goof-off character, nothing for the adults like Wall-E. Very forgettable. - neel360, on 07/20/2008, -2/+11Am I the only one whose trust of an article plummets the moment I see a misspelling? It's like, this article didn't matter enough to you to even use a spellchecker? Hell, my Digg comments matter enough to me to pay attention to my spellchecker.
convaluted =/= convoluted - Meccabilly, on 07/20/2008, -1/+15Pitch Meeting:
Exec: Ok, so what you got?
Pitcher: Ok. Are you Ready? Monkeys..... In Space.
Exec: Sold!
Pitcher: Wait, there's more...
Exec: No need! That's perfect. Heres 40 mil - get it made!
Pitcher: Sweet. - iSinned, on 07/20/2008, -0/+6Space Chumps
- Abomonog, on 07/20/2008, -2/+2I think the reviewer did not get the point of the movie.
The kids liked it and that is who it was made for.
That's all that really matters.- TremorX, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Not all kids are so easily amused though; my 3 year old said "This is stupid" during the trailer.
Then again, he also loves Terminator and Daft Punk, so I'm not sure he counts.- gabrielconroy, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0Then again, he is amazing, so I might as well have just said that from the start instead of using the article as an excuse to.
- darkphenox, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Your child is badass
- DraxusD, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2but can he run Crysis?
- allisonaxe, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2nobody can run Crysis. if you know someone who says they can run it, they're either lying to you, or they have summoned a dark spirit into their computer and you should pour holy water into the air intakes.
- aladrin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2It's -not- that hard to also make the movie entertaining for adult (or anyone over 5) and maybe even throw in a little educational value. They just didn't even TRY on this one and it sucks for it.
- TremorX, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4Not all kids are so easily amused though; my 3 year old said "This is stupid" during the trailer.
- OC73, on 07/20/2008, -22/+3Oh God. Not another Obama article.
- D14BL0, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Haw haw! That was some funny *****, man!
See you at the clan meeting, buddy! - Asheis, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2***** you man, how much of an insensitive, racist ***** can you be?
- Cuchanu, on 08/14/2008, -0/+2Very
- D14BL0, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2Haw haw! That was some funny *****, man!
- kyle212, on 07/20/2008, -1/+8This is like Homers dream movie
- emh924a, on 07/20/2008, -1/+2homers dream movie would involve donuts and duff beer

- punkcat, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1thanks for the heads up, but i didn't need to be told.
oh and ripping off Towelies' button code/musical tune from South Park didnt win them any points. - chicagospur, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3You know you are in trouble when the tag line of a movie is "Presented by the Producer of..." or "From one of the team that brought you..."
Unless the producer is Spielberg or even Bruckheimer, you know it's going to be *****.- aladrin, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3You know, that used to be true... But even the good movies have those taglines now, so you can't go by that.
- wheresmyglasses, on 07/20/2008, -1/+0awww i wanted to see the monkeys go to space:((((
- JaredRR, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4I went yesterday... it was a kid's movie... and my kids loved it. Ages 10 and 5. The reviewer compared it to the Venture Brothers... he's not the target audience.
- seantubridy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Your 10 year old doesn't sound too smart.
Ouch. Did I just insult someone's kid? That's a new low, even for digg.
- seantubridy, on 07/20/2008, -0/+5Your 10 year old doesn't sound too smart.
- Inohavehalos, on 07/20/2008, -0/+11Bugs life? Make ants.
Finding Nemo? Make "shark tale"
What else we got? Wall-E and "space chimps"- elister, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Welcome to the world of Hollywood.
When James Cameron was making The Abyss (and it was taking too long to complete) studios were able to crank out Deep Space 9 and Leviathan. Boring sci-fi's about underwater aliens that got to the big screen months before Abyss late August premier.- AirportManager, on 07/20/2008, -1/+6you mean Deep Star Six.
- cnot3, on 07/20/2008, -1/+3Bugs life was a ripoff in its own right. Hey, lets remake The 7 Samurai, but with Bugs! Should we credit it? No.
- elister, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Welcome to the world of Hollywood.
- shortmilton, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1So THAT'S how Planet of The Apes got started.
- DrBeaverhausen, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1There's only two reasons you would release a movie like this on the same day as The Dark Knight. Either you're deluded and actually think it will some how stand a chance. Or the movie is a complete sack of crap and by releasing it the same day as TDK you hope it won't get much attention for being the total sack of crap it is. I guess its official, its a sack of crap. But even my seven year old son knew that.
- elister, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1Ah crap...... yeah I mean Deep Star Six.
- d1gp1g, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2i would rather watch "Dick in a Box" again
- johndavidjack, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1What is the name of that movie were those monkeys fly airplane simulators and ***** for the Air Force, but then they go nuts and riot, etc? I know it's a real movie...
- macofish, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3Project X; w/Mr. Bueller himself.
- toxicityj, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1It's a kids movie and it's not going to be fun and funny for an adult. Just because pixar manages to make every movie fun for every age group, doesn't mean every animated movie is going to do the same.
- PilotHead, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Is it me or CGI talking animals movies that isn't Pixar have been desperate to make money with ***** wave after wave of these kinds of movies?
Madagascar 1 & 2
Happy Feet
Surf's up
Over the Hedge
Barnyard
The Ant Bully
Everyone's Hero
Happily N'Ever After
Hoodwinked!
Monster House
Open Season - havesometea, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2The trailer proved this movie is going to be a turd.
- PilotHead, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2"Cocky anti-establishment hero saves the day with his (never her) cocky anti-establishment ways, while also learning responsibility and that the establishment serves a purpose after all. Meanwhile, stuffy establishment is taught to loosen up by cocky anti-establishment hero. Everyone hugs."
That was gold - HP844182, on 07/20/2008, -0/+4It still can't be as bad as Beverly Hills Chihuahua looks
- whyisntcakesin, on 07/20/2008, -0/+0the one flaw with this article... they dont take into account the stoner demographic, or the entire midwest. theyre just not the target market
- Spartandog, on 07/20/2008, -0/+2Using the excuse "It's for kids" should never be a reason to make a crappy film. There a many timeless classics that still hold up years after we've grown up. The reason? Good writing and directing, and people who cared about making a good movie. These disposable films, meant for "family entertainment" become landfill in no time.
- carrognia, on 07/20/2008, -0/+1I can't believe they are making a movie out of a reference in a GTA in-game radio station...
- nickj224, on 07/20/2008, -2/+1I actually liked it and thought it was much better than WALL-E. Obviously the WALL-E animation was better, but Space Chimps was more entertaining overall. Andy Samberg is just downright funny and who doesn't love any character with David Puddy's voice?
- ricefarmer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1americans need to learn there are other genres they can do with cgi... look at anime theres genres of every kind... same mentality that americans think cartoons can only be for kids
- ricefarmer, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1americans need to learn there are other genres they can do with cgi... look at anime theres genres of every kind... same mentality that americans think cartoons can only be for kids
- yacks, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1What about CGI Porn?
- soundgoddess, on 07/24/2008, -0/+0I admit I SAW IT! It was TORTURE! I was actually blindfolded, my mouth was covered with duct tape and I was driven to some remote location in front of a screen. Then the blindfold was taken of me and I was forced to watch the monkeys. That should not happen to anyone! Why me?
