Space Chimps Monkeying Around Isn't Entertaining

io9.com — If, by any chance, you've seen the trailers for Space Chimps and thought, "Hey! Wall-E was pretty good, and who wouldn't want to see the uplifting animated tale of three heroic monkeys traveling into space to save the world?" then I have one simple message for you: For the love of all that you hold dear, fight that thought with all you have.

        that and some idiot who left his cell-phone message beep on and was texting during the film, and some stupid woman sitting 3 seats away from me who harpy-cackled at everything the joker said..... and then the sound in the left channel kept cutting in and out for the first 30 minutes.......

        I've had it with movie theaters. i've tolerated it for a while, but ugh, NO MORE!

        ...until something else i really want to see comes out, i guess. *sigh*

      • TheTaoOfBill, on 07/20/2008, -0/+3From the poster I got two things that usually spell disaster. One. It was a movie completely revolving around monkeys. Usually when that happens the writers rely solely on "hehe monkeys are funny" jokes. I also had a face in palm moment when I read the tagline. "On July 18, go bananas". That just screamed this was going to be a cheesy "hehe monkeys are funny" movie. I did hold myself back from judging it too much because I thought okay maybe this might be a cool story about the original test apes that we launched into space. Then I saw the trailer and they were on planets and with aliens and wormholes and *****. So that took away my hope that a good story could come out of it.

        And of course now we got this review.

      Yes, all from the posters. They were amazingly expressive of how crappy this would be.

      I didn't need the trailer to confirm my suspicions, but that's exactly what it did.

      I can't imagine why -anyone- went to see this.

I then realized this is what Eddie wanted all his life, he played more than one character in almost all his movies, some for no reason like the old Asian dude in Norbit. See he was trying to see what if he was someone else besides him. The sad thing is this will probably be the plot to his next movie.

      • teamgwho, on 07/21/2008, -0/+1well in all honesty I didn't really want to go. My wife and son were going and I felt that I should go only because I've dragged them to movies they didn't want to see. This summer has been possibly one of the best summers for movies in recent memory.

        Great: :Ironman, Kung Fu Panda, Wall-e, Wanted, TDK, Hellboy II (I haven't seen it but I'm going to assume Hulk fits in this catagory)
        Good (or at last not terrible): Get Smart, Hancock, Space Chimps
        Bad: Indiana Jones, The Happening

        We've still got coming XF, Clone wars, Tropic Thunder, Pineapple Express, Midnight Meat Train, Mummy 3 (I thought the idea was stupid till I saw the trailer and it looks entertaining)

    Dancing monkeys: funniest thing ever to an 8 year old. Do they sing? Even better. Is it really simple? Holy *****, they'll understand and laugh.

    "It's possible that I'm holding the movie up to standards it never wanted to reach; certainly, the kids in the screening I went to seemed to be having a good enough time."

    It's a kids movie. It's supposed to be dumb.

All of the original Disney animated movies, for instance. Just because a movie is aimed at children doesn't mean it gets a free pass a being a piece of *****.

        And as an adult, I can't sit through any Disney movie. Dancing gay cowboys are just not my thing.

They had kind of cool alien landscapes, but most of it wasn't as good as a bad episode of --- I don't really know of cartoons that are this bad anymore.

    Weak jokes, annoying goof-off character, nothing for the adults like Wall-E. Very forgettable.

      When James Cameron was making The Abyss (and it was taking too long to complete) studios were able to crank out Deep Space 9 and Leviathan. Boring sci-fi's about underwater aliens that got to the big screen months before Abyss late August premier.

But even my seven year old son knew that.

The reason? Good writing and directing, and people who cared about making a good movie. These disposable films, meant for "family entertainment" become landfill in no time.

Then the blindfold was taken of me and I was forced to watch the monkeys. That should not happen to anyone! Why me?
