Facebook Snags Firefox VP: Facebook continues to be the biggest talent magnet in the valley. Just this morning facebook has announced that it has hired Firefox VP Mike Schroepfer, currently VP of Engineering at Mozilla.
Mike agreed to join Facebook as a Director of Engineering with responsibilities that include leading front-end product and platform engineering. Mike will start in the coming weeks and report directly to Mark Zuckerberg until the Vice President of Engineering role is filled.
Mike will work on high profile products for facebook in the platform area. In 2007, PC World to named Mike one of the Fifty Most Important People on the Web. Facebook continues to deepen the talent pool of it’s engineering and technical staff with an eye toward the future.
Mike stated “I’m incredibly proud of my time at Mozilla where I helped to organize the development of Firefox and grow its user base to hundreds of millions of users. I’m looking forward to applying my experience in large-scale development to some of Facebook’s key engineering challenges. The Facebook Platform has an amazing opportunity to enable people to share and collaborate with others across the entire web and I’m thrilled to be a part of driving it forward.”
Mark Zuckerberg, founder and CEO of Facebook said “Mike has a lot of experience building great products and engineering teams. At Mozilla, he built Firefox 3 and manages the product development process — a particularly impressive position given the global, collaborative and open process in which Mozilla operates and develops its products. Facebook has similar values and Mike will be a great addition to our engineering team.”
Note the key words open process. I suspect that Mike will be involved in platform products and some of the facebook open source projects. Facebook bringing Mike on board shows their level of committment to rapid growth of new products and increased functionality of the facebook platform.
