The University of Michigan’s quarterly customer satisfaction index came out today, and in the Website category Google came out on top with a score of 86 out of 100 (up 10 percent from last year). Yahoo slipped 3 percent to a score of 77. MSN’s score was flat at 75, and tied with NYTimes.com and ABCNews.com. AOL came in at 69, and that is 3 percent better than last year.
Here are some select scores, with the comparable 2007 numbers in parentheses:
American Customer Satisfaction Index Scores (2nd Quarter, 2008)
Google: 86 (78)
Yahoo: 77 (79)
MSNBC.com: 76 (74)
ABCNews.com: 75 (74)
MSN: 75 (75)
NYTimes.com: 75 (73)
Ask: 74 (75
CNN.com: 73 (73)
USAToday.com: 73 (72)
AOL: 69 (67)
The only surprise here is Google’s massive jump. Is it really doing that much of a better job than last year, or is it just that its halo effect keeps growing?

Select another one from the top - Apple: 85!
YAHOO should be on #2 spot. Their results are hardly relevant to what I’m looking for. What happened to those days when we only know Yahoo!
Gagan
niche-affiliate-marketing.com
and all that without any customer support link on their homepage!
I know a foot with someone’s name on it…
Speaking from personal experience, Google has satisfied me more than the other websites that are listed, so I can understand why it deserves the top spot.
Yikes, Yahoo is closer to abc.com than Google.
Maybe Yahoo shouldn’t be thinking about Google as competition anymore…they’re in two different leagues.
Any ideas why so many companies increased their scores YoY (Google blew it out) while Yahoo dropped the most out of the above list?
How can they be people’s “starting point for the web” when they’re going backwards?
No doubt it would be Google. Why is Apple not on the list?
Apple is on the list, but since their ranking at the top of the PC industry (and the only PC manufacturer to increase their satisfaction scores since the previous survey) directly refutes Michael’s whiney rant earlier today they were “unpublished” in this list…
Anyhow Google won’t do it on the next two years
and exertion is getting logarithmic to reach 100% .
But they’re doing great job, for sure.
It’s because Google’s interface is so simple… Apple makes their products fairly complicated for non-Apple users. I saw this book, Easy Google (link to ebooks version) and I laughed because Google is easy. However, with the first Mac I bought, I actually did need a ton of supplemental reading to do all the things I needed to do.
And sometimes even Google can be funny

I’ve noticed that google seems to have fined-tuned their search algorithms recently - I’ve been finding what I want out of their search much more easily than a year ago.
People got used to google. People now like the heap of text google displays both in search and gmail.
We all hate google for lack of aesthetics in their webpages, but no alternative.. Hope Yahoo BOSS will take over..
Yeah, I love gaudy display ads blinking and links at the bottom of my email that I didn’t add.
wow, did they just ask users who search, or people who use PPC? I’ll bet that number is a lot lower. a LOT lower.
What is a Google “customer” in this case?
Someone who uses the website for free? Or a paying advertiser?
Good question. Definitely somebody who is able to type something on a textbox and has no questions about it…
Have you used Google Adsense? is there anything more irritating than that? And don’t get me started with Google Analytics… You see your web traffic a day later… c’mon, you’re Google, aren’t you?

While the details of the index is not available about how the index was made, I would guess that Google Maps played a heavy factor. Google Maps has been becoming more useful in wide range of area. See all the privacy concerns regarding to the Google Maps/Earth, we can see how Google Maps get into everyone’s life even if you don’t use Google Maps.
It is another reason why we need to optimized more in Google
Yeah, totally agreed.. Hurry up let’s continue to optimize our website..

This is not right. Google has too many issues now. If you take a global survey Google will be quite low in the rankings.
Even a 1o year internet user cannot signup for any of google for the first time.
Google has its simple and friendly interface, and powerfull back-end. i was very happy with google-provided services.
Google is not so hard to use.
Opening a gmail account is not more difficult than opening an hotmail account.
